June 1 2010, the Universidad Católica de Santa María and LACCEI will OAS workshop on Advancing Strategies for Engineering Program Accreditation and Quality Assurance in the Americas in Arequipa, Peru.
Since 2006, LACCEI has been part of the action plan of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Engineering for the Americas (EftA) initiative to increase engineering program accreditation in the Americas. LACCEI has sponsored annually the OAS-EftA Accreditation Workshop: Advancing Strategies for Achieving Quality Assurance in Latin America and the Caribbean Engineering Education. In addition to the workshops outcomes include: formation of a taskforce, a research group, a manual, a five step model, and several papers. The fifth OAS-EftA accreditation workshop will take place in Arequipa Peru on 1 June 2010 under the leadership of Dr. Zenaida Otero Gephardt.

Zenaida Otero Associate Professor, Chemical Engineering Program of Rowan University She is experienced in preparation for ABET accreditation and has gievn several workshops to prepare administrators and faculty under go engineering program accreditation under the ABET system she organized the 2009 OAS-EfTA accreditation workshop in San Cristobal Venezuela and a working group of the LACCEI Accreditation task force in Lima Peru in December 2009 in LACCEI. She is the vicepresident of accreditation a member of the advisory board and a member of the board of trustees. She is on the editorial board of the Formación Universitaria, Centro de Información Tecnológica, La Serena, Chile.

Maria Larrondo Petrie is the executive director of LACCEI and associate dean and professor of computer engineering at Florida Atlantic Univeristy she has helped to organized all the OAS Efta workshops on accreditation and has published 3 papers on their outcome. she developed the LACCEI model of 5 steps this model is called the engineering education capability maturity model and has been expanded by the LACCEI accreditation task force. Dr Larrondo Petrie is a member of the international federation of the engineering education sociaties; vice chair of engineering education innovation of the OAS advisory board for engineering the Americas(EfTA).

Amparo Camacho Diaz she is currently academic director of engineering college at Universidad del Norte, Barranquilla, Colombia; she is a stand-in member of the deans council of ACOFI (Asociacion Colombiana de Facultades de Ingenieria); she is responsible for development of academic assessment process in the engineering college, and she led ABET accreditation process for engineering programs at the college; she has been a program evaluator for the National Accreditation Council (Concejo Nacional de Acreditacion) in Colombia during the last decade; at this time she is a member of the designer team for national examination for engineering students.

Javier Páez Saavedra was founding vicepresident for the americas of the IFEES (International Federation of Engineering Education Societies) he was a past president of ASIBEI(Asociación Iberoamericana de Enseñanza de la Ingeniería) and past president of ACOFI(Asociación Colombiana de Facultades de Ingeniería) he is currently dean of engineering at universidad del norte UNINORTE en barraquilla colombia, where successfully let his univerissty in accrediting multiple engineering programs through ABET last year he is a founder and past vicepreseidnet of LACCEI and is assiting in the formation of the LACCEI engineering deans- rectors council

Dr. Mariana McPHERSON

Professor, Universidad Tecnologica de Panama, Panama

Mariana McPherson is a professor of the Universidad Tecnologica of Panama since 1982, she was executive director of the CentralAmerican Agency of accreditation of programns of architecture and engineering for 3 years. Executive secretary of the Consejo Nacional of Evaluation and Accreditation of Universidad of Panama since december 2009 until now.

History

Five Members of the Latin American and Caribbean Consortium of Engineering Institutions (LACCEI) Executive Board participated in the Engineering for the Americas Symposium in Lima in 2005. They actively participated with 3 presentations related to accreditations:

Dr. Gossett Oliver presented the different accreditation systems used, particularly the UK system in Jamaica, which results in Chartered Engineers.
Dr. Maria Larrondo-Petrie presented a study on the scarce number of LAC engineering programs that had been accredited or certified as substantially equivalent by an international recognized agency, and presented a LACCEI model to move engineering programs towards this recognition.
Dr. Clement Sankat made a plea for the need of an umbrella engineering program accreditation system for the Caribbean Region.

As a result of this participation, LACCEI agreed to be in the action plan of the symposium, charged with holding an annual OAS-EftA accreditation workshop to address accreditation concerns. From 2006 – 2009 LACCEI has organized and funded four workshops on Advancing Strategies for Achieving Quality Assurance in Latin America and the Caribbean Engineering Education.
