Workshop 1:  June 18, 2006 in El San Juan Hotel & Casino in San Juan, Puerto Rico

OAS/EftA Contribution:
Saúl Hahn, Chief, OAS Dept. of Science & Technology presented the OAS perspective on the state of science and technology in Latin America and the Caribbean  and the importance of Engineering for economic and social development
Format:
  • Panel and Discussion Sessions on:
    • Perspectives from the diverse accrediting agencies, represented were ABET (US), CEAB (Canada), ECUK (United Kingdom)
    • Perspectives from organizations representing engineering deans and chairs, represented were ANFEI (Mexico), ASIBEI (Iberoamerica), ACOFI (Colombia), CONFINI (Peru – Industrial Engineers)
  • Four Round Tables that discussed strategies to advance the action plan
Costs:
Estimated $5,000 sponsored by LACCEI and the University of Turabo; travel costs for OAS speaker funded by OAS EftA

More than 40 participants representing 13 countries: Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador,  Honduras, Jamaica, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, Trinidad Tobago, USA, Venezuela
Results
  • The Turabo Declaration, recommended an accrediting system be formed for the Caribbean Region and collaboration
  • Refereed publications and presentation in national and international conferences in: Belgium (SEFI), Brazil(ASEE Global Colloquium), Colombia (LACCEI), USA (ASEE)
  • Signing of the Engineering Education Collaboration Agreement for the Americas in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, October 2006 by ASEE, OAS, EftA, LACCEI, ISTEC, ASIBEI, IFEES

 

Workshop 2:  held May 28, 2007 in Club Maeva Hotel in Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico

OAS/EftA Contribution:
Daniel Marcek, Head, EftA presented the EftA and Industry perspective on the state of science and technology in Latin America and the Caribbean  and of the impact on competitiveness of assuring quality of education
Format:
  • Panel and Discussion Sessions on:
    • Perspectives from the government: Mexico
    • Perspectives from industry – HP, EftA, Motorola, and ISTEC (Iberoamerica and US)
    • Perspective of the Profession – CFIA (Costa Rica), UMAI (Mexico)
    • Perspectives of Deans – ANFEI (Mexico), ACOFI (Colombia), Dominican Republic, Peru, Puerto Rico,
    • Perspectives from accrediting agencies, represented were SINAES (Costa Rica), UNESCO, CACEI (Mexico), CEAB (Canada), ECUK (United Kingdom)
    • Perspectives from organizations representing engineering deans and chairs, represented were ANFEI (Mexico), ASIBEI (Iberoamerica), ACOFI (Colombia), CONFINI (Peru – Industrial Engineers)
  • Round Tables that discussed strategies to advance the action plan
  • An Accreditation Track, Panel and Keynote provided a continuing thread of interaction throughout subsequent 3-day of conference

Results
  • Tampico Declaration, recommended collaboration to develop a model for comparison of accreditation system that would provide structure to progressing toward accreditation allowing the institution to pick the engineering program accrediting system.
  • The networking provided by the continued thread of interaction in accreditation related events throughout the 3 day LACCEI conference that followed resulted in a special interest group on accreditation of 20 individuals and an action plan
  • Refereed publications and presentations in national and international conferences in: Turkey(ASEE Global Colloquium), Honduras (LACCEI), USA (ASEE), USA(IEP)

 

 Workshop #3: Held on June 3, 2008 in Tegucigalpa Marriot Hotel, Tegucigalpa, Honduras

Format:
  • Panel and Discussion Sessions on:
    • Perspectives from international engineering education associations – ISTEC, ASIBEI, LACCEI
    • Perspectives from the Profession – CFIA (Costa Rica)
    • Perspectives from industry – HP, EftA, Motorola, and ISTEC (Iberoamerica and US)
    • Perspectives from accrediting agencies, SINAES (Costa Rica), ACAAI (Central America), ECUK (United Kingdom), GCREAS (Greater Caribbean)
    • Perspectives of Universities – Puerto Rico (UPRM), Venezuela (TECNAR and UNITEC), Honduras (UNITEC), Jamaica (UTECH)
    • Perspectives from organizations representing engineering deans and chairs, represented were ANFEI (Mexico), ASIBEI (Iberoamerica), ACOFI (Colombia), CONFINI (Peru – Industrial Engineers)
    • Research on Accreditation Model Development – USA (FAU) and Peru (UPN)
  • Round Tables that discussed strategies to advance the action plan
  • An Accreditation Track, Panel and Keynote provided a continuing thread of interaction throughout subsequent 3-day of conference

Results
  • Tegucigalpa Declaration recommending collaboration between ISTEC and LACCEI to provide a model and software platform to facilitate the process of accreditation independent of accrediting agency chosen.
  • The networking provided by the continued thread of interaction in accreditation related events throughout the 3 day LACCEI conference that followed resulted in a special interest group on accreditation of 20 individuals and an action plan
  • Refereed publications and presentations in national and international conferences in: South Africa (ASEE Global Colloquium), San Cristobal (LACCEI), USA (ASEE)
   

 

Workshop #4:  Held June 2, 2008 at Universidad National Experimental del Táchira in San Cristóbal, Venezuela

Format:
Hands-on capacity building workshop using the LACCEI 5-step EECMM model and the ISTEC GRANA software platform for accreditation management and assessment system.  Planned outcome: build pragmatic skills needed to conform to global standards for accreditation of engineering programs.  Panels of perspectives and experiences will be moved to conference accreditation track.  Other recommended changes: 1) add an Accreditation Agency Forum Meeting and 2) accreditation evaluator training workshops
