Abstract

The focus of this research work is to study the public spaces within informal settlements. The study was conducted in slum areas located in the State of Táchira, Venezuela. These settlements are part of the urban axis Palmira - San Josecito and belong to the metropolitan area of San Cristóbal. The objective of this research is to determine: The structure of the public spaces within the informal settlements; the role of public spaces in the urban infrastructure not only in the informal settlements, but also in the metropolitan area. The results indicate that the structure of the public spaces is deficient. This deficiency contributes to the segregation of informal settlements. On the other hand, the results also indicate public spaces provide a proper environment for the integration of the informal settlements and its inhabitants. However, public spaces within informal settlements do not contribute with the integration of the settlements with the metropolitan area they belong.
